Last week I sent home a Scholastic flyer for anyone interested in ordering books.  I will be sending home another one tomorrow (Friday, August 30).  All book orders are due by Friday, September 6th.  I have received a few checks already, which I will send in upon deadline.

If you are interested in ordering online, please do so under our classroom code:  MCTP8 or click on the banner below to take you directly to our class page.

Every book you buy through the Reading Club gives back to the classroom and helps build our classroom library!

Donors Choose

DonorsChoose.org is an online charity that makes it easy for anyone to help students and teachers in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America post classroom project requests on this site, and you can give any amount to the project that most inspires you.

As a school, Palmetto Academy has received over $25,000 in funded projects thanks to the generous donors in our community who care about education and what we do as a school.  I wanted to bring our class projects to your attention just in case you would like to donate or know someone who would.

We currently have two class projects listed:

Getting to Know You

Did any body else start singing "Getting to Know You" in their best Julie Andrews voice?  Well, I did and it was terrible.  But that was totally not the point of my title - I promise.

We began our Name Unit today.  One of the most important parts of starting Kindergarten is getting to know classroom friends and - even more important - learning their names.  I introduced our unit with the book A My Name is Alice.

This book is such a great choice because not only does it focus on names (and the beginning letter), but it also demonstrates alliteration by describing each character with words that begin with the same first letter as their name.

I came up with a sentence frame that looked like this:
M my name is Mrs. Stinnett.  I like muffins.

I asked that they think of a word to tell the class something they like.  Their word must begin with the same letter as their name.  Animal words seemed to be the trend...

After brainstorming our words, we created cute little "mini-mes" to show off our sentences.

I was so impressed with the quality of each child's work!  Aren't these fabulous?  They all worked very hard on them.  Check out these game faces...

We also began Writer's Workshop today. The first few weeks of Kindergarten writing time is about establishing trust, confidence, routines, and expectations. Our first unit is intended as a framework for the writing work we will do with the main goal of introducing the kids to the world of writing.

The lesson today taught the kids that writing is just telling on paper.  I modeled how to think about what to write and how to provide the most information as possible.  No child is expected to be able to write just yet, but I do expect that every child does his/her very best.  If they know their sounds and know some words, I encourage them to try to write what they know.  If they don't have this knowledge yet, I encourage that they provide as much detail as possible in their drawings.

Here is the modeled drawing I did...

Labeling, stretching words and using realistic colors are all skills we talked about today.  We will work on applying those skills over the next few weeks.  I thought the kids did a great job for their first day!

Last week we made a very special magnet so that all of your child's Kindergarten work can be on display in your home.  I hope they all made it home safe and sound.  I feared that there might be a few crumpled up at the bottom of a book bag or two - so just in case - this is what they look like if you haven't seen it yet...

Our class is slowly, but surely starting to pick up on classroom rules and procedures.  The behavior chart is in full effect now, so if your child came home with a -1 or a -2, don't freak out.  I am being very strict on my expectations so that we can start off the year with a clear understanding.  It will definitely take some time for the kids to get acquainted with it all, but the more serious I am, the quicker I will see results! :)  Please encourage your child to try hard to follow each rule and procedure we have at school.

Binders and agendas went home today and will continue to go home from now on.  Please be sure to check your child's binder/agenda every night.  I ask that you initial the behavior that I document in the agenda each night.

Also, I will begin sending homework home on Friday.  The homework packet is expected to be returned on Thursday of the following week.  You will find a "Homework Club" card in the ziplock bag inside your child's agenda on Friday.  Every time they turn in their weekly homework completed, they will get a punch on their card.  After five punches, they get to pick out of the treasure drawer.  This card needs to stay in the ziplock bag so it doesn't get misplaced.

I hope everyone has a great week.  Stay tuned for more weekly updates!

Welcome to Kindergarten

Introducing Palmetto Academy's Class of 2027...

We are two days into the school year and I can already see the greatness that will come from this special group of kids.  The personalities are diverse and the learning levels high!

For the last two days we have focused on procedures and routines.  We will continue to practice, practice, practice until the classroom runs like a well oiled machine.  I'm hoping by the end of our first full week we will begin to function like a true Kindergarten class.

Here are a few pictures from the first two days...

DAY 1

The kids played with Play Doh as we patiently waited for all of our friends to arrive.

I even got a chance to have a picture taken with my own Kindergartener who is next door in Ms. Wyskida's class (my daughter too).

We began our day discussing how to be good listeners.  We charted out a few visuals so we have daily reminders of what to do.

Look with your eyes, listen with your ears, think with your brain and sit criss cross applesauce with hands in your lap - I also threw in a hand to remember to always raise our hand!
We read a great first day book called First Day Jitters.  We discussed what jitters felt like and all agreed we had them on the first day.  To get rid of our jitters, we made Jitter Juice!

With a show of hands - who liked Jitter Juice???

Who did NOT like Jitter Juice?

We later tallied up our votes...and somehow our pictures didn't reflect our tallies?  Young minds change quickly :)

We also read The Kissing Hand and discussed what our first day feelings were.  We made a special keepsake for our mommies and daddies - I hope you all received yours!

DAY 2

We started learning more about each other by creating an All About Me Book.  We will work on this book for the remainder of next week.

We played a round of Grab a Question where a child grabbed a question from the basket.  I read the question out loud and the child that picked it, answered it.  We also took one of the questions (what is your favorite color?) and graphed our answers to see which color had the most votes and which color had the least votes.  Blue was the favorite!

One of the last activities we did was making our first class book.  We read Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten and discussed the various ways we got ready for Kindergarten.  Each child got their first chance to be an author and an illustrator of our book.  Here are a few example pages from our book...

Our classroom bulletin board in the hallway is finally complete!  Every T-shirt now has a bright Kindergarten smile gracing its front.

Next week we will start our Name Unit and will continue to focus on routines and procedures.  I will also be conducting assessments so we can dive into curriculum ASAP.

Have a great weekend!
